A number of months ago, Pinoy R.N. published the article, 10 Free Nursing Apps for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. We recommended iOS-based applications like Medscape, Epocrates RX, Black Bag, Eponyms (for students), WebMD Mobile, Skyscape Medical Resources and Medical Encyclopedia so that you can access a wealth of medical information while on the go.

Those who have tried the iPhone and iPod Touch applications we recommended can vouch for the usefulness of the apps listed especially during clinicals. But Pinoy R.N. and Ward Class are going to take things a notch higher by rounding up the best nursing podcasts available.

Nursing podcasts, already popular in the U.S., are new learning tools designed to reinforce what nurses already know. It is also useful in augmenting textbook and classroom learnings by offering great and fun ways to study for nursing exams and review on different nursing concepts and procedures.

With the help of your mobile devices such as the iPhone, iPod Touch, Zunes, Android phones, or any other MP3 device, nurses can download podcasts produced by nursing professionals and/or medical institutions and listen to them briefly at work, during study period, during a long commute, or when you're bored at home.

We searched the world wide web for the most useful ones available and here are some of the better produced nursing podcasts so far:

The Nursing Show. Hosted by medical educator Jamie Davies, this podcast has over a hundred episodes and offers timely updates on nursing news and a wealth of tips and information for nurses and student nurses. Click here for The Nursing Show's podcast.

Geriatric Nursing. Produced by the Darthmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, this podcast provides a series of lectures for nurses and student nurses interested in Geriatric Nursing. You can subscribe to the Geriatric Nursing podcast here.

Nurses to Gather at Manila Hotel for Nurses Week and Founding Anniversary Celebrations

Nurses from all over the country will converge next week at the Fiesta Pavilion of the Manila Hotel for the 88th Anniversary of the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA), 53rd Nurses Week Celebration, and National Annual Convention.

As nursing stakeholders and policy-makers convene, Filipino nurses are hopeful that issues and concerns affecting the nursing profession will be tackled specifically the unabated exploitation of volunteer nurses, the urgent need in improving the quality of the nursing education and practice, and the chronic shortage of local nursing jobs.

The PNA is the professional organization of nurses in the Philippines.

Founded on September 2, 1922 as the Filipino Nurses Association (FNA), it was conceived by Anastacia Giron-Tupas with the aim of unifying all Filipino nurses and promote and professionalize the nursing profession in the country.

The FNA became a member of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) during the council’s congress in Montreal, Canada on July 1929. In 1966, the organization was renamed Philippine Nurses Association (PNA).

Since then, several milestones have marked the history of nursing in the Philippines which include:

President Carlos P. Garcia, through Presidential Proclamation No. 539, declared the last week of October as "Nurses Week.’’

In 1997, President Fidel V. Ramos issued Presidential Proclamation No. 1060 declaring the year as "Nurses Diamond Jubilee Year.’’

Congress passed Republic Act 7164, the Philippine Nursing Act of 1991 mandating the government to protect and improve the nursing profession in the country to promote a dignified existence for nurses as a guarantee for the delivery of quality health services throughout the nation.

This year's convention, scheduled on October 26-28, focuses on the nurses' role in serving the community with the theme, “Delivering Quality, Serving Communities: The Challenge for Filipino Nurses Leading Chronic Care.”

Senator Cayetano Wants to Probe Nurse Volunteer Fees and Other Exploitative Practices of RP Hospitals

Senator Pilar Juliana “Pia” Cayetano, chair of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, recently filed a resolution in the Senate seeking to investigate the exploitative practice of private and government hospitals in hiring new nurses as "On-the-Job" nurse trainees instead of being employed as regular staff nurses.

Cayetano also wants the Senate to investigate reports that hospitals, instead of compensating nurse trainees for services rendered, are collecting fees from the nurses.

In 2008, erstwhile Philippine Nurses Association President Lea Paquiz slammed this exploitative practice of Philippine hospitals. A bill prohibiting this abusive practice was subsequently filed in congress the following year but it never saw the light of day.

Recently, Pinoy R.N. published another article discussing the matter where several nurses confirmed that such scheme exists.

Registration Schedule for New Nurses in Manila, Pampanga, and Cebu

The Professional Regulation Commission has released the schedule of registration of new nurses in Manila, Pampanga and Cebu.

New nurses who passed in the July 2010 Nurse Licensure Examination are advised to follow the posted schedule to facilitate an orderly registration process.

Initial registration for new nurses in Baguio starts on September 6, 2010, Monday, at the PRC Baguio Regional Office.

Registration schedule for new nurses in Davao, Bacolod, Iloilo, and other areas will also be posted here once it becomes available.

Successful examinees should personally register and sign the Roster of Registered Professionals. Listed below are the requirements for initial registration:

Duly accomplished Oath Form or Panunumpa ng Propesyonal;
2010 Community Tax (Cedula);
Two (2) pieces passport-size pictures (colored with white background and name tag);
One (1) piece 1”x1” picture (colored with white background and name tag);
One (1) piece documentary stamps;
One (1) piece short brown envelope with name and profession;
Original and photocopy of NSO Birth Certificate (original copy for presentation purposes only); and
Initial Registration Fee of P600.00 and Annual Registration Fee of P450.00 for 2010-2013.

The Professional Identification Card and Certificate of Registration will be issued 3-4 months after the initial registration.

Oathtaking and Registration Instructions for New Nurses

The Professional Regulation Commission reminds new nurses that they are required to bring the following when they register:

The oathtaking ceremony of new nurses in Manila as well as the previous ones who have not taken their Oath of Professional will be held before the Board on Monday and Tuesday, September 20 and 21, 2010, with morning (8:00 A.M.) and afternoon (1:00 P.M.) sessions at the SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City. All must come in their white gala uniform, nurse’s cap, white duty shoes, without earrings, hair not touching the collar and without corsage .

Oathtaking tickets for the National Capital Region (NCR) and nearby regions will be available at the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) at 1663 F.T. Benitez Street, Malate, Manila, from September 1 - 20, 2010 on a “first come first serve ” basis.

Hospitals to Nurse Volunteers: "Show Me the Money"

In light of the upcoming run that ALLGEN is sponsoring, we thought it appropriate to bring up the topic of volunteering.

We all know that many nurses are offering their services as volunteers to hospitals and other health institutions. The sad truth is that majority of these institutions require nurse "volunteers" to pay a fee in order to serve. Note the use of quotation marks on the word volunteer. By definition, the word volunteer imparts the idea of free will. Merriam-Webster gives us the following descriptions.

As a noun:

1 : a person who voluntarily undertakes or expresses a willingness to undertake a service: as a : one who enters into military service voluntarily b (1) : one who renders a service or takes part in a transaction while having no legal concern or interest (2) : one who receives a conveyance or transfer of property without giving valuable consideration

Nowhere in the definition can you see any mention of money. Monetary compensation is not the essence of volunteering. Why then are "volunteer" nurses in the Philippines asked to pay to render their services?

You may say that the intention of those nurses who volunteer are not that pure anyway. Some - if not many - nurses volunteer simply because they need the experience in order to get accepted to higher paying jobs outside of the country. But, did you know that if you render volunteer service while not a registered nurse, it won't be counted anyway?

That is beside the point, though, volunteerism ought to be a pure act. On the one hand, hospitals and health institutions accepting volunteer nurses ought to willingly accept the services of those who offer - without any thought for the additional income that can be had. On the other hand, nurses ought to willingly offer their services without making "experience for their resume" the primary objective. Isn't helping others without asking anything in return the spirit of nursing anyway?
